If you’re an artist has this ever happened to you? You wake up and feel totally uninspired. It could be you didn’t get enough sleep the night before and you’re too tired to feel creative. Or maybe you’re in that aggravating no-man’s land between projects or series and not sure what to explore next. Maybe you’ve got a lot on your mind with family or other worries and it’s sucking the energy right out of you. Whatever the cause, it’s important to acknowledge these down-times (we all have them) but not let it get you down!
In that vein, here are some inspirational quotes from artists and famous people that not only show the commonality of the human condition, but could perhaps give a bit of comfort and uplift to your dreary day.
“Have no fear of perfection, you’ll never reach it.” Salvador Dali
Oops—that one isn’t particularly inspiring, is it? Unless it’s to make you feel better about being a mere mortal!
Let’s try again. Here’s one to get you into the studio and working again:
“Art washes away from the soul the dust of everyday life.” Pablo Picasso
“If a man devotes himself to art, much evil is avoided that happens otherwise if one is idle.” Albrecht Durer
How about—yes, we create art to feel alive!
“The main thing is to be moved, to love, to hope, to tremble, to live.” Auguste Rodin
“To be an artist is to believe in life.” Henry Moore
“The only time I feel alive is when I’m painting.” Vincent Van Gogh
“If you ask me what I came to do in this world, I, an artist, will answer you: I am here to live out loud.” Émile Zola
If you’re paralyzed by self-doubt, then take these words to heart:
“Whether you succeed or not is irrelevant, there is no such thing. Making your unknown known is the important thing.” Georgia O’Keeffe
“An artist cannot fail; it is a success to be one.” Charles Horton Cooley
“Do not fear mistakes—there are none.” Miles David
Better than sitting around doing nothing, feeling sorry for ourselves…
“Life obliges me to do something, so I paint.” Rene Magritte
“Don’t think about making art, just get it done. Let everyone else decide if it’s good or bad, whether they love it or hate it. While they are deciding, make even more art.” Andy Warhol
And lastly, when we’re feeling our lowest, here are wise words to remember:
“Life beats down and crushes the soul and art reminds you that you have one.” Stella Adler
“Art, undeniably, is conducive to happiness.” Unknown
Absolutely! Now I’m going to go create some art.
